The 2020 – 2021 hockey season is almost wrapped up (congrats to the U14 & U16 girls that got to play in the USA Hockey national championships). It was the strangest season that any of us have ever seen and hope to never experience again. We had quarantines, shutdowns, travel bans, hockey bans, no spectators, and numerous other items that tested all our patience.
I am proud of the efforts of our board, our coaches, our TA’s, officials, and our parents in all doing our part to keep the kids playing. They skated over 1300 hours this past season, which is not far off from what we would consider a normal season.
We have heard from a relatively small number that there were aspects (tournaments, dry land, league games, etc.) that were missed out on and we understand that. We have also heard from many others that the season exceeded expectations. The board has reviewed all the season’s financial data and compared budgeted cost vs actual. Based on thorough review, we have determined that there is merit for a refund.
The board has unanimously voted to approve a 7% refund for families that paid the full CBHA tuition for the 20-21 hockey season*.
The board has also agreed to hold registration costs flat for the 2021 – 2022 season.
If you wish to receive this refund you will need to complete an online registration (separate one for each skater). The registration gives an option for either an electronic (VENMO) or paper check refund option. Refunds will be processed at the close of the registration (5/7/21) and can take up to 14 days to be received.
Anyone choosing to forego their refund will be directly making a donation to the CBA General Fund. As you may know, CBHA is a nonprofit and the only organization in the state that has ownership stake an ice rink Casco Bay Arena (CBA). This past season we had one chiller stop functioning, which cost CBHA almost nearly $30k to repair. CBA also had to defer mortgage payments to help stay afloat. Multiple sources of revenue including Middle School, High School and other recreation leagues were reduced or eliminated due to the shutdown in November. Those sources were not fully recouped by CBA when we returned to hockey. We have a list of maintenance items we are hoping to tackle at CBA this off season. We have multiple fundraisers planned, but we have a unique opportunity in front of us. We deeply appreciate those families who are able and willing to help. You can indicate this simply by doing nothing. We will send a receipt to you for tax purposes. We also understand that these are not easy times and know that the refund will help many families, which is why we worked hard to make it available to all. We also realize that many families feel very fortunate and would rather have their dollars help support the program.
A big thank you, and we look forward to seeing you all out on the ice next season!
