The USA Hockey Congress has implemented a new safety regulation requiring neck laceration protection for all players, except adults, in games and practices. This rule also applies to on-ice officials under the age of 18. The new mandate will take effect on August 1, 2024, and includes players in the youth, girls, and junior age groups.
At the Casco Bay Hockey Association, we fully support this important safety measure. As of August 1, 2024, no Casco Bay player or referee under the age of 18 will be allowed on the ice without wearing a neck guard. This rule aims to enhance safety and prevent serious injuries during hockey activities.
USA Hockey has been recommending neck laceration protection and other cut-resistant gear for some time. The recent decision by the USA Hockey Congress follows extensive evaluation by the Safety and Protective Equipment Committee, highlighting the organization's commitment to player safety.
Mike Trimboli, president of USA Hockey, stated, “Safety is always at the forefront of our conversations and the action of our Congress today reflected that.” Pat Kelleher, executive director of USA Hockey, added that the hockey industry is working to improve protective products for players.
Parents, please ensure that your children have the required neck protection gear before the new rule takes effect. Let’s work together to create the safest possible environment for our young athletes.
