In June of 2019 the Seacoast Spartans and Casco Bay Hockey formed the Casco Bay Spartans, a new partnership to offer more opportunities for youth hockey players in Maine and New Hampshire to compete at the highest level available in New England.
For the current 2019-2020 season one Casco Bay Spartans 2007 birth year coed team was created and earned a spot in the top Elite 9 (E9) division of the Boston Hockey League (BHL) through parity play, the first Maine-based team to ever compete in this Tier I league. The team has been very competitive and is battling for a spot in the March playoffs.
Boston Hockey League is the premier youth ice hockey league in New England; the Tier I E9 division is considered one of the top leagues in the nation with most teams ranked in the top 50 nationally. Partner organizations include the Boston Advantage, Seacoast Spartans, Valley Jr. Warriors, Assabet Patriots, East Coast Wizards, New Hampshire Avalanche, Boston Junior Rangers, Springfield Rifles, Worcester Junior Railers, 95 Giants, Americans, Greater Boston Junior Bruins, New England Knights, and Rhode Island Saints.
Casco Bay Spartans – 2020-2021 Season Coed Travel
For the 2020-2021 season the Casco Bay Spartans are planning to have 4 full-season birth year teams (2007,2008,2009, and 2010) competing in the BHL, each with the opportunity to play in the Elite 9 division after parity play. 2011 birth year players who want to “play up” are welcome to try out for the 2010 team. If there is enough interest we will add a 2006 birth year half-season team that will also compete in the BHL, ending in November before the Maine high school season starts. This half-season team will have a fall season of elite-level hockey before skaters focus on high school hockey. The final number of Casco Bay Spartans teams will be determined after tryouts as we want to make sure any team joining the BHL will be competitive.
Casco Bay Mariners and MEAHA – 2020-2021 Season Coed Travel
Casco Bay Hockey is planning to have a single coed Mariners travel team at each of the 10U, 12U and 14U levels. Casco Bay Mariners teams will participate in the MEAHA league, with tiers to be determined following tryouts and evaluation of the other teams in MEAHA.
Casco Bay Hockey will hold separate tryouts for Casco Bay Spartans and Casco Bay Mariners coed travel teams. Spartans tryouts will occur first, tentatively scheduled for the end of February, Casco Bay Mariners tryouts will be held in March. Team rosters for the Casco Bay Spartans will be announced before Mariners team tryouts, so players not making a Spartans team will be able to try out for a Mariners team.
Skaters on Spartans full-season teams should expect practices to start in August and games to start the first week of September. We expect each team will participate in 3 tournaments, BHL parity rounds, and normal league play with the chance of making playoffs, for approximately 55-60 total games. There will be weekly practices in August and 2-3 practices per week September through March. Both Mariners teams and Casco Bay Spartans teams will have weekly skills practices and dry-land workouts. If formed, the 2006 half-season team will play 10-14 games in September, October, and November and practice once or twice per week.
While we encourage players to compete in more than one sport, other fall sports can cause conflicts. When there are conflicts, Casco Bay Spartans games are expected to take priority. If a skater decides to play a fall middle school sport, the expectation is that they will skate at all Casco Bay Spartans games. Attendance policies for the half-season 2006 birth year team are TBD.
Playing on a Casco Bay Spartan team requires a significant commitment. Half of the 35 regular season league games will be played at home (Yarmouth, Falmouth, Portland, UNE) while the other half will be played out of state and across New England. In most cases, overnight travel is not required unless attending a tournament. Most of the families on the current 2007 Spartan team find the travel to be manageable and preferable to some of the other supplemental leagues Casco has skated with during previous seasons.
How much will Spartans team tuition be?
Tuition for full-season Spartans teams is expected to be between $2200 and $2500, including fees for all tournaments, game and practice jerseys, socks, warm-ups, dry-land and skills sessions. Cost for the half-season Spartan team is TBD.
Will the Casco Bay Spartan Teams play in the E9?
We expect most Spartans teams to compete in one of the BHL divisions (American or National), but all teams will compete in the parity rounds in September and have the opportunity to place up into the E9.
The partnership between the Seacoast Spartans and Casco Bay Hockey has given top players in the state of Maine the opportunity for a higher level of play and a more complete season in a well-established league. This partnership has led to multiple opportunities for both Casco Bay and Seacoast Spartans players beyond just playing in the BHL/E9. Players that live in southern Maine and play for the Seacoast Spartans in Exeter are able to practice once a week with the Casco Bay Spartans team to reduce weekly travel. Two players from Casco have been provided the opportunity to join the Seacoast Academy team playing in the International Quebec Peewee tournament this February. Casco Bay Hockey plans on continuing to grow this exciting partnership with Seacoast and providing new opportunities for players in Maine as members of the Casco Bay Spartans or Seacoast Spartans teams.
